Q: What kind of romance does Nicci Harris write?

A: A mix of genres, but they all have one thing in common: morally grey men. Going forward, I'm only writing softer, kind heroines, and no, softer isn't spelt the same as weaker.

Q: Does Nicci Harris write the pregnancy trope?

A: Yes, often. It's not in every book, but chances are high that if you pick up one of my books, you'll get a baby bump for free. Why? Because I want to see my hard men be dads. I want to see my heroines worshipped for the miracle of their bodies.

Q: Do Nicci Harris's heroes hurt the heroines?

A: No. My MMCs don't hurt their women. Ever. A good spanking is all they get — and that precedes praise and an O.

Q: Do Nicci Harris's heroines make reckless decisions?

A: No. My FMCs don't run away from the MMC into danger like a bunch of idiots. They're usually pretty smart about their decisions, or they're genuinely tricked into bad situations.

Q: Nicci Harris and her writing style:

A: I don't always follow grammar rules because you're experiencing a narrative through first-person present tense. I try to create an authentic and believable voice that breathes. Pauses. Fragments. Each character is unique. Some might talk in long, lavish sentences that over-explain, are sometimes redundant because this character is full of anxieties and self-doubt. Others may narrate in short, curt, and simple sentences—they are straight to the point and confident. And no one says whom in their own head, so I don't use that. I know the grammar rules, and I break them on purpose because I can.

Q: Is Nicci Harris's writing in British or American English?

A: I write 90% British English! Yes, we spell words differently. No, tyre and bannister and traveller are not misspelt (yes, that is how we spell misspelled).

Why 90%? 'Cause I decided to appease some readers to prevent them flagging my books with typos on Amazon. Which was very time-consuming. I gave them fetus... I don't spell it like that. I spell it foetus, but it came up so many times as being flagged by readers I decided to permanently make the change. Also, I like toward, backward, forward. I like the way they sound, so I've adopted them, too. I learnt (yes, it's not learned in British English) after my tenth published book and a successful career simmering away, that I can decide. I don't have to write for a publisher's style guide — I am the publisher. A bloody good one, too. So, I made my own. All my choices are purposeful, not random.

Q: How much spice or explicit content is in Nicci Harris's books?

A: A lot, and it's detailed — nothing fades to black. But it's always purposeful, used to move the emotional arc forward, break down walls, or build trust between my characters. It's never filler.

Q: Do Nicci Harris's books contain trigger content, like nonconsent or violence?

A: My books may trigger you. There's nonconsent. There's the occasional dubious consent, which is usually not very dubious. There's a lot of murder, a lot of torture, a lot of trauma. Pain. Recovery. 

I'm dealing with genuine issues, and I'm dealing with them in a way that respects the true depth and pain of what happens in real life. I'm not doing anyone a favour by glossing over rape. It is grotesque. It is horrific. It is painful, and I would be disrespecting survivors by glossing over that to not offend people.

I'm not making hard scenes comfortable for people, because that is disrespectful to the people who actually lived through those things, lived through the pain, the detail, and took the time to heal.

I'd hate for a real survivor to read one of my stories and think, 'she sugar coated that completely.' Or worse, 'Why haven't I been able to recover like that character has or as quickly?'

So if you're sensitive to dark content, my books aren't the place for you—and that's okay. We can still be friends!

Q: What order should you read Kids of the District in?

A: 1) Our Thing, 2) Cosa Nostra, 3) Her Way, 4) His Pretty Little Burden, 5) His Pretty Little Queen, 6) Their Broken Legend, 7) His Pretty Little Heirs, 8) Her Pretty Little Revenge, 9) The Dark That Kept Us (prologue).

Q: What happened to Facing Us?

A: It's been unpublished. I rewrote and re-released it as The Dark That Kept Us.

Q: What order should you read The Cradled Common in?

A: Born For Silk, Born For Lace, and Born For Marble are complete standalones, read them in any order.

Q: Is there a new book coming in The Cradled Common series?

A: Yes. Born For Fur is coming soon.

Q: Is CurVy 13 Nicci Harris's darkest series?

A: Yes. It's my darkest adventure, and I wouldn't recommend it if you have any triggers at all.

A: Paperbacks are available on Amazon and in bookstores. Ebooks are Kindle exclusive and included in Kindle Unlimited (KU).

Q: Does Nicci Harris use AI to write her books?

A: I do not use AI to write my books. I write every sentence myself in Word. I use Word to edit. I use the comments section like crazy, as if I'm my own editor leaving myself mean things, telling myself that I need to show and not tell, to find a better word, and whatnot.

My writing process has evolved in this AI climate to show step by step, throughout the months or years that I write. There are documents in pieces, showing the progression of the manuscript to the endpoint.

Q: Does Nicci Harris use AI for art and marketing?

A: No, I do not use AI for art or marketing. I have two artists that I use: Deb Lancianese and Ed Napoleao. All my art can be proven, copyrighted, and has time-lapse reels of them being drawn.

Q: Does Nicci Harris have a literary agent?

A: Yes. My agent is Josie Beck of Beck Literary Agency.

Q: Does Nicci Harris have translation deals?

A: Yes. My German translation contracts are with Vajona, who have translated and published The Cradled Common in German.

I also have French contracts with Black Ink Éditions, who have produced and published Our Thing and Cosa Nostra in French, with hopes to continue the Kids of the District series in French going forward.

I also have a Polish contract for The Cradled Common, which has not been published yet.

Q: Does Nicci Harris produce audiobooks?

A: Yes, and I paid a lot of money to have them created with real human voices, well-known voices, too. That kind of production is a massive expense, and it's something I think readers and listeners should understand about the independent publishing industry.

I wrote, funded, and managed my audiobooks entirely myself. And still, platforms like Audible take more than 70% of the commission on a product I created from nothing. As an Australian author, I'm not able to go exclusive with Audible, which means I get 25% instead of the 40% I'd get if I could go exclusive.

I'm not saying any of this to be "poor me," or to make anyone feel guilty or pitying. I'm saying it because I believe knowledge is important. If readers knew more about this, maybe Audible would feel social pressure to change. Maybe the people at the top would feel pressure to be fairer to the indie authors who do so much for this community, who have literally brought the book community back to life over the last decade.
